Weekend Break boating holiday on the Leeds & Liverpool - from Barnoldswick
For everyone
Three night weekend break 21 miles 6 locks 10 hours
The ultimate in slowing down: take this route if you just want to switch off in remote, stunning countryside.
Navigation notes
This route allows for the lock opening times we expect to see in 2026 - locks are likely to be locked overnight to conserve water while reservoirs are under repair. Please note that you MUST be back through Greenberfield Locks by Sunday lunchtime - exact lock opening times will be in your pre-holiday Information Pack and Boat Manual.
This is one example of routes which our customers enjoy. Distances and times shown are for the return trip. You can vary the distance to suit you, because there are plenty of turning points ('winding holes') marked in the guides on your boat. Information we provide about specific waterways or suggested routes is for general reference only. Please see more about route availability.
Friday
East Marton 3 miles 3 locks 2 hours
Set off through Barnoldswick, a Yorkshire town despite its postcode, then we'll escort you through the three locks at Greenberfield. If you fancy a pub, then it's not a long walk back to Barnoldswick. Otherwise, carry on and find a quiet mooring for the night just below the pretty little church at East Marton.
Saturday
Foulridge 12 miles 3 locks 4 1/2 hours
Next day, set off into one of the remotest and most beautiful places anywhere on the canals, with sheep and birds in all directions. Turn just before Bank Newton - you will NOT have time to go down these locks - and go back up Greenberfield locks by lunchtime. Go past the boatyard from which you started, and moor for the night near Barnoldswick - several pubs.
Sunday
Salterforth 5 miles 0 locks 3 hours
Travel across the summit, go through the mysterious tunnel and turn before the top of Barrowford, before making your way back. Stop at The Wharf in Foulridge, then spend the evening in The Anchor at Salterforth.
Monday
Lower Park Marina 1 mile 0 locks 1/2 hour
A short sail without locks brings you back to base by 0900.
This trip has very few locks and lots of dreamy countryside - the perfect relaxation.
