SOWERBY
BRIDGE WHARF
Sowerby Bridge Wharf is
the terminal basin of the Calder & Hebble Navigation, and its
interchange with the Rochdale Canal. We are lucky to be in one
of the outstanding canal basins in the country, whose 200
year-old buildings were recently restored to good condition and
active use, after seven years’ work by British Waterways and the
tenants – including us. As well as a thriving pub and two restaurants, we now have a coffee shop, upmarket hairdressers,
ladies' gym and offices. The buildings
look smashing, and lots more people are working in the basin. We
are very grateful to British Waterways, Calderdale Council and
the Sowerby Bridge Forum for the sensitive way they handled the
scheme, and to the Heritage Lottery Fund and Yorkshire Forward
for much of the funding. An essential factor was the imaginative
and persuasive input from Regeneration Through Heritage, part of
The Prince's
Regeneration Trust. The whole site is listed Grade 2, and
No. 4 Warehouse (which contains our wet dock) is 2*. |

BOATYARD SERVICES
We specialise in narrow boats with diesels, but we can
also work on cruisers and outboards. We'd be pleased to
discuss any work you need. Our advice is free (you don't
have to take it) and we stick to our quotations; we only
do extras if you authorise them. For standard charges
see our price list opposite. |
Fitting out
Our very high standards of joinery can be applied to
refits on your boat. Millimetric accuracy and a
staggering gloss on varnish-work hide robustness that
will stand the test of time. |
Lifting out
We lift boats out onto our large hard standing area, in
batches to get the cost as low as we can. |
Bottom blacking
We can pressure wash your boat and apply 2 coats of
Intertuf. For stern gear repairs, we recommend J
Crowther (0161 652 4234). For hull repairs, we will
undertake only minimal underwater patching on
basically sound boats. |
Chandlery
We have a modest shop selling simple things like
bilge pumps, our special Rochdale windlasses and blue
loo - and painted ware, and waterproofs…... We have a
much bigger stock of things for our hire fleet which are
available for sale but not on show. If a piece of kit
works for us, it certainly will for you. And we can get
anything you need to order, generally on our fortnightly
delivery from
Midland Chandlers, but overnight if
necessary. |
DIY
Whether you want to do a small quick job or a total
rebuild (the one is apt to turn into the other!), our
yard is the place to DIY. If you want to have part of
the work done for you, you are welcome to bring in an
outside contractor (subject to our Health & Safety
rules); and we are of course happy to quote for any jobs
ourselves. |
|
MOORINGS
We have about 50 boats on our moorings or hard-standing.
Some are residents, others just visiting on a tour of the
Yorkshire waterways. Our customers have formed a pleasant
community, and welcome newcomers. The yard is secured by a gate
at night and on Sundays (you have a key).
A number of moorers are
residential, which helps the sense of community - and security.
The number of residential moorings is limited, and vacancies
seldom arise; but we sometimes have room for boats which
are not being lived on.
Metered electricity is
available on most moorings.
|
Boat sales and new boats
We sell a small number of second hand boats. See our
current list and our advice on
buying a boat. |
Engine repairs
From an oil change to a complete overhaul, we can give
your engine the care it needs. We work on your boat to
the same high standards as we apply to our hire fleet,
where avoidance of breakdown and long service life are
vital. |
Gas fitting
Our CORGI registered team can fit a proper, safe gas
system on your boat, or do repairs. If you are fitting
your own gas system, look in
Calor Marine Shop for some useful advice. |
Painting
'Did you spray it?' Certainly not, but few can beat our
brush painted deep gloss. We prepare very thoroughly,
pay great attention to detail, and follow carefully the
owner's requirements as to colour layout and decoration. |
Calor Gas, Diesel and pumpout
We do these at all reasonable hours. |
